(Another) Building burning in Doha

Posted in:

[img_assist|nid=1187|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=148|height=180]Breaking news! Another tower is burning in Doha - this is happening as I'm typing (it's 1pm on Saturday). Lots of flames and smoke rising up. Don't bother trying to drive down to City Centre Mall today - all the roads will probably be closed off and traffic is going to be crazy in the area.

The tower looks like Salam Tower but this isn't confirmed.

New Features

Posted in:

Just like Doha, Qatar Living keeps on getting new features! One that I think you'll particularly enjoy is a WYSIWYG text editor. If you don't know what that means, don't worry! Next time you're adding a new forum topic you'll see a few icons on top of where you put in the text. These will allow you to spruce up your post with some formatting (bold, italics, lists, etc.) and will also allow you to easily insert pictures into your post!

This feature is currently just being tested...please give me your feedback!

Mail Forwarding Services

I will need to sign up with a mail forwarding service before I move from the USA to Qatar. I've never used one before so I don't know how well they work. Do any of you use one, which one is it, how much does it cost, and are happy with it?

I subscribe to quite a few magazines and I'm not sure if I should cancel all of them before coming or if I should have them sent to me by the mail forwarding service along with the bills and letters.

How Bad is the Water?

I read that you need to either boil the water or drink bottled water, otherwise you'll get sick. I also read you should either boil the milk or use powered milk with bottled water and should avoid uncooked vegetables and unpeeled fruits. Is this really necessary? How often do people get sick from the water, milk, or food in Doha? Is this why I need a vaccination for typhoid fever, hepatis A an

Clothing for Western Women

Posted in:

My husband and I will be moving to Qatar in a few months. I am still confused about the clothing I should wear. I heard it's best if I wear long sleeves. I have a lot of modest dresses that hang several inches below the knees but they are short-sleeved not long-sleeved. They do not sell long-sleeved dresses or blouses in the stores where I live this time of year. Once the long sleeved clothing is available it will be Sept. or Oct. and we will have already moved to Qatar. Even if I could find long sleeves during the summer, they will be designed for cold weather and will be a hot fabric.

High Turnover of People at Qatar

Posted in:

Its nice that a lot of new people join this site and ask questions about life at Qatar. Many of them are new and excited about living at Qatar..However there is an untold story of 100s of people who come to Qatar and leave quietly within their first two years...In Most govt. department/Major Private Companies..a serious shortage of Manpower is obvious..yet daily farewells are norm..(So much so that after much ridicule some companies withdrew the actually number of vacancies on their websites)

Why? (aka QR10 million for a mobile phone number)

I was reading about an auction announcement in a news paper. The auction was for SIM card with a special number (6666666). The bidding openening price strated at 1,000,000 Riyals and ended at 10,000,000 Riyals!!

I don't know, but how many straving people could eat with 10 Million riyals?? What could this ammount do for a charity??

I remember someone told me that a car plate with special serial was sold for 3 million Riyals.

What a bloody waste ...

My accomodation in Qatar is

A Posh Villa
40% (51 votes)
Flat/Apartment
48% (61 votes)
Company Labour Camp
6% (7 votes)
Hotel
3% (4 votes)
Sheebu's dream home
2% (3 votes)
Total votes: 126
