Are the offices meant only for Qataris? Or..

gfxmad's picture

Recently, I got a chance to go to the traffic department at Matar Qadeem. My friend, he is an Indian, and doesn't know anything about Arabic. But the officials there can only speak Arabic. That was really disappointing. Why they cant speak English? Since the expatriates are from all over the world. Is the offices meant only for Qataris? Or people who speaks only Arabic. So he had to go 3 times to finish the deal, only because of this issue!!

smoke said we could look at this in two ...

we could look at this in two ways my friend
1) Do NOT expect an individual to know all the languages just coz people are coming from different other countries. Say someone knows to speak only french do u expect the Qataris to learn french as well?
2) If your friend cant speak arabic then why point fingers to the Qataris?

Do not take them all as a whole but as individuals, i'm sure they can understand english very well but there are other ways to do things...take someone who speaks arabic with u...or ask someone there to translate for you...now go blow your whistle somewhere else buddy :)

Since English is the Global language and I asked the same not french or Latin or anything else. You can see the same scene in driving school, accidents or anyscenes in Doha relating to the officials.

You are saying they can handle english well right??

Then can you say, how they can write DRAVING LICENSE and PENATES for driving license and penalties as the main display boards in the counters??

gfxmad...what about Post Offices...ever been in there...lol

Now they have opened money transfer counters at Post Office but who is going to send his hard earned money through someone who doesnt understands any of his questions?

Its really impossible communicating with them. Ditto at Immigration and ditto at Traffic.

Since they are dealing with the public and the expatriates majorly it would have been a very good experience had the staff been bilingual......now how difficult it is?

Coz i know some people who are working for that TRAFFIC OFFICE in Matar Qadeem and if I'm not mistaken, all speak good English.

Maybe you were looking for a fellow indian that might be working there and there's none?

Just wondering...no offense meant...

You are in Qatar. Qatar is an Arabic country. And they don't have to put bilingual staff in the government offices. If you want you are welcomed to learn Arabic.

Do they have bilingual staff in European government offices?

I had to go to Traffic 2 times (before 2008)....both times they could not speak english....ok there was one guy who could speak but he was the rudest one.....

When people in the Gulf say Bilingual they mean "arabic & english" and not "Arabic and Chinese".

Once I had a major problem with the visa thing none of the girls at the counter could speak a word in English. And they would not allow me to speak to the Senior guy. Finally I dashed inside as soon as I got a chance ....and the senior gentleman explained to me....and the thing was quite simple. I had to go 3 times for this.

Ok they have the choice not to change and make things difficult for the "guest" (yet keep talking about hospitality)....after all the choice is theirs.

gfxmad's picture

gfxmad said absolutely mohan... you said it..! ...

Its our decision to work here but that doesnt means we are grabbing all what we are doing and no one is thinking for whome we are working for? Its the hospitality! and all the opposition came from those speaking arabic.. i feel its funny..:))
I agree at the traffic dept or any other depts. they cant speak gentle, everytime harsh or rude. Y so?? is it because of the 'workload'..lol

amnesia said there are FREE arabic ...

there are FREE arabic lessons at many centers, including the Islamic Center.

Go and learn arabic. many countries only speak their national language. There are many that learn english too.

Don't expect people to speak english, it's just a bonus.

As I said before, when I was in Japan, it was so hard to find someone who speaks english and most foreigners learned Japanese!

Read my blog post titled Mind your language

Additionally, one method of speaking may be considered rude to you but not in the country.

In Egypt it's normal to shout, in Japan, it's normal to say NO directly, in China, it's normal huff different countries different ways!
