Boycott Villaggio?

shabina921's picture

It's looking unlikely that Villaggio will open its doors this week. But when it does, the parents of the children who died there are calling for a boycott against the mall until they get some answers.

Anyone who does is contributing to the culture of corruption and incompetence that led to this tragedy. After all, why make changes if it has no real impact on the bottom line?

The Qatari gov. needs a better PR team. It could easily win major public points in Qatar and abroad by handling this incident with greater openness and justice. So far, it's getting horrible reviews from a world Qatar wants to love it.

fubar said I don't think the issue is ...

I don't think the issue is that we should boycott it because something so terrible happened there - similar incidents happen around the world.

The point seems to be that they want the opening delayed until the court case has been resolved and those guilty have been identified and punished.

Brit, as for the issue of compensation, I don't think they are looking for money to make their troubles go away, but think about the sheer cost that these families would have faced to send the bodies of their children home for burial etc. That would have cost thousands and thousands of dollars I would think. A huge sum of money.

Bachus's picture

Bachus said Exactly fubar. The issue is ...

Exactly fubar. The issue is not keeping the all closed forever; the issue is about seeing justice done before the mall reopens. Very reasonable.

Prism's picture

OBL was blamed for smashing aircrafts into twin towers killing people and destroying property. Did US stop sending aid to the country where he was dug out from and met his end or should I say justice was served to the people who died.

"If you do not want your enemies to know the facts, take care that your friends do not know them"- Machiavelli

Segmund's picture

Segmund said Prism ...

I hate to call things irrelevant but your post is idiotically irrelevant by any stretch of my mind. How the hell is OBL and Villagio related? Or are you trying to say that plane crashed to Villagio too? Who is the US in this picture then? Get a life loser.

Regarding boycotting the malls, I think there is simply no point. I do sympathize with the people whose loved ones lost their lives and I urge the authorities to carry out a very stern investigation to bring to justice anyone who is responsible for this preventable calamity. I do not mind those being hanged for manslaughter who were, if they really were, responsible for the killings. However, boycotting a mall would just serve no purpose.

On this earth, on ever single part of it, many children have been born and many have died. Boycotting a building just because an accident happened there is not a wise thing to do.

mozaismyhero's picture

The authorities should be pressed for answers.

But with regards to boycotting Villagio, TCOM is right - what about the poor workers who will lose their jobs if there is no work for them? Work elsewhere? Not that easy to find alternative workplaces.

A boycott of vilaggio will be as successful as the Arab boycott of Israel.

Bachus's picture

Bachus said I don't think anybody ...

I don't think anybody realistically expects a boycott to affect the profit margins of the mall.

For me it's about keeping clear conscience. I couldn't set foot in place where I know that such injustice has been done as this, yet no one has been punished. Everyone else has to act as their consciences dictate.

fluffy123's picture

fluffy123 said boycotting doesn't solve ...

boycotting doesn't solve anything. boycotting is not going to bring the lives of those children back.

i sympathize with the families because no one should have to bury their children. children are supposed to bury their parents not the other way.

however death is a part of life. tragedies happen everyday. the everything cannot stop when someone dies. the employees at the shops at villagio are not getting paid. some of the shop workers were transferred but not all of them. especially the ones who worked for shops that didn't have other retail outlets in Doha.

they are already under paid and responsible for sending money back home. and now that they are no getting paid because the shops aren't making money because they are called the situation is even worse.

and i know people like to point the finger at the mall managers or whatever. and i think they have to take responsibility for not having a proper fire alarm system and exits. but at the end of the day it was an accident. no one intentional killed the children. it was wasn't done maliciously.

Bachus's picture

Bachus said I don't claim to sinless ...

I don't claim to sinless nomerci, or without hypocrisy. I follow my conscience as best I can, when I can. It's all anyone can do.

If I can keep a clear conscience by not shopping in some stupid mall (and instead going to some other stupid mall a few miles down the road) so be it.

I am, however, alarmed at of the complacency of some of the posts here, with all of the "people die every day" crap. Followed by the soulless glee of others at the idea of closer access to yet another Gap and Starbucks. It makes me realize why some nationalities really aren't ready for democracy.

timebandit's picture

timebandit said I am shocked to read that the ...

I am shocked to read that the parents are in the predicament they are. Until now I have just assumed that they were being well looked after. By that I mean that they would have been well informed, consulted and indeed financially compensated for their loss (as they should be, more than generously!). They should be given no reason to stress at all, and their feelings should be a top priority in moving forward.

The fact that they feel the need for a petition tells me that instead of being well looked after, they are feeling out in the cold, and need to bring their situation to the attention of the public. And I am glad they have, because otherwise I would still be assuming that their every need was being tended to regarding the tragedy.

I am deeply saddened by this news. Come on Qatar, do the right thing. Where is all of that undying support the families were shown in the first couple of days after the disaster? Are they no longer important? Was the initial support just for show?

I will not boycott Villaggio because if I did it would make no difference whatsoever, and I do like the cinema there. But I hope I hear/read in the near future that these poor people have had all of their concerns addressed and that they do not have to resort to writing letters to the media again. They should not be made to suffer any further!

Personally I want to know why the Fire Safety Certificates for all the major malls and shopping complexes haven't been made available.

As time has gone on I have less and less confidence that the malls actually are 'safe' (ie up to international standards) and that some rich Sheikhs have just put pressure on the government to allow them to open back up.

If we are to believe that Villagio and City Center and Landmark etc are safe, independent, international safety audit companies should have come in, examined the malls, and reported openly on their findings.

This is all starting to smell like a really bad cover up now.

If there's nothing to hide, the Fire Safety Certificates could be made public immediately.
