Driving US License.

Basically i'm going to be living in doha for a little while, around 6 months. My dad owns Carmaxx so he'll probably be able to give me a car to drive. My question is I have an American License USA, and i'm 17. I can't get an international license because you need to be 18 to get one, same with the Qatari license. Will i be legally allowed to drive in Qatar. I've been driving for nearly a year now, the driving age in USA, California is 16. I will probably be attending school, so its kind of important i drive. Will i run into big problems if I drive and i am pulled over with only an american license.

if age is not an issue, US license holders can only drive here for 7 days. Then you must do some sort of test for a temporary license or longer term one if you will have an RP.

Also how do they know that i have been driving for more than 7 days? I wouldn't think i'd have to take my passport with me everywhere i go.

You can't get a license under 18 unless your family can show you must have it (usually for young men to drive their non-driving female relatives). You won't qualify and you will have to take the driving test anyways with a US license, so you can see if they will even allow you to do that.

You cannot drive here with a US license, you need a Qatari one.

To avoid taking a test, you need an international license. However, it's only valid for 90 days from entry plus the int. license won't be valid once you have your residency visa. I know many Americans who are here short term cannot drive because they don't want to go through a long process of taking a license test.

Perhaps you just have the int. one and leave the country every 90 days...good luck

nope you cannot drive on a US license, whatever age you are, you have to re-pass your test here in a manual car, (if you are here for more than a short duration)

Or have your HR sort it out for you, so you can get a waiver on the test. That's what virtually all Americans I know do.

If you are underage, they won't issue you a license.
