Anyone else find this disgusting? Are taxi drivers so poorly paid in Qatar they cannot afford to eat and have to rely on charity from hotels?
How deeming it must be for the taxi drivers that they cannot earn a proper living and have to rely on handouts. No wonder they have to rip off their customes just to survive.

Disgusting? ...I do not find that disgusting in anyway. Giving someone one aftar is not going to make any difference to anyone anyways. Laborers, drivers, house cleaning staffs, house maids and the like are people in the lower socio-economic stratum almost anywhere in the world. I am yet to find a millionaire taxi driver anywhere in the world.
It is corporate obligation for companies to do things of social welfare. Most companies do so, even if it is just an advertisement gimmick. In order to find people who they can hand out Iftar packs to, they have to choose from people with low socioeconomic status.
As to being paid well, that is another issue and may be important in its own right. This issue is completely unrelated. Handing out iftrars is a gesture of charity and we can even invite our very rich friends for Iftar. It may not necessarily mean that if we would not invite them, they would have any problem finding food. The taxi drivers too would not have died out of starvation the next morning, had the hotel not handed out the food. :)

I don't see anything wrong ...I don't see anything wrong with this. The hotel is providing food for workers. This does not mean that they can't afford to feed themselves.

Last week there was an Iftar drive by QLVG, they were distributing food on signals! What you think, all those people were poor? and couldn't buy food for themselves?

We are all flawed humans. No one is perfect within us and no one can claim their knowledge to be absolute. There is always a possibility that MIH is right and we are all wrong. Equally is it possible that we are right and MIH is wrong. Let us try to engage in healthy debate. There is no reason to be harsh at each other. There is no reason why we should subject MIH, as a person, to such scathing criticism.
In every other post, MIH is being accused of something wrong. People have called MIH as a person opposed to religion. They have said the person to behaving poisonous views on religion.
I believe it is MIH's personal matter, and we have no right to abuse the person for having any opinion. If MIH thinks there is no reason to show any emotional response if we hear the word alcohol, if in MIH's opinion, Karwa drivers are paid less, if my own slant is interesting, if 'we' had sex with neanthedrals, if women should be allowed to work alongside men--- in MIH's opinion, why should we have any bad notion about it. Let us say, "ok, fine, let me tell you what I think..."
By passing such remarks of derogatory nature about MIH, we will only make the person angry and defensive. And this is no way to win any debate.

If the hotel wanted to make a gesture why not invite some of the taxi drivers into one of their restaurants to give them a chance to experience something they could not afford on their own. Handing out scraps as if they are to be pitied seems wrong to me. I know why they don't want to invite them in as they don't want smelly indians upsetting their valuable customers and handing out food is cheap publicity they can farm out to the newspapers.
You may have a different opinion to me and I respect that.

Agreed with Fathima and others..There's nothing disgusting with distributing Iftar packets. It depends how you look at it.
Also, I don't find the link between low wages of taxi drivers and the hotel distributing packets to them. As Segmund said, the issue of low wages needs to be addressed too but not with this.

The smelly Indian comment was not mean tot be my judgement but why the hotels will not do this and this is what they really think of them.
If a hotel,was handing out food in the slums of Mumbai I would be more impressed as these people live in poverty as they do not have jobs or a good diet. A man who comes to Qatar to earn a living should have adequate salary for a good diet.
It's a cheap stunt by the hotel for cheap publicity.

I was recently at one of those free-food-take away areas during iftar. (I do freelance photography) and my sight fell on people grabbing at food as if they've never eaten a proper meal before. Some of them stocked away food in bags and took it with them.
I'm not saying offering food is wrong, and I don't agree with your insensitive comment on a certain nationality. But I think the best way to reward these low-paid workers for all their hardwork is not just meals, but also a decent salary that they can save up for and hold their heads up for.
I stand on my point of view because I've personally spoken with many of them--- some who haven't been paid in months and some who came here in hopes of a better life and left cheated by contractors.

guys... ...I am sorry but I think it is getting too much now. I was the first person to comment on the post. And what I said is exactly the same as almost everyone else said later. However, you guys have gone a little too overboard now in bashing the person who started the thread.
I can empathize with MIH (despite disagreeing with her/him many times), because I have seen myself, sometimes when I post a post, some people would just turn up out of the blue and say bad things.
MIH did not commit a crime to give an opinion. It was just a feeling towards the act of handing out aftars. And we all unanimously agreed such a feeling was not appropriate. However, why are some of now keeping on scolding and scathing MIH?
Is it such a terrible crime to have a different opinion? Why are you suggesting that MIH should be removed from the site? MIH did not commit any crime. If you want to debate with someone's opinion, do not try to win by having them removed from the site. This will lead to no debate in the end.
Once again I am urging all of you to exercise restraint and not to allow emotions to run high. Keep your calm and let Qatarliving be a lovely rendezvous for ever. The goodness of the passing night on you all!

My take on the matter ...Ingeniero, I know some of MIH's comments go down well with the folks here; however, you can not compare MIH with LP. MIH is usually still thoughtul and reasonable in the posts and you can see a clear attempt at making some point on MIH part. LP usually does not have anything to say but most of his comments are of how-is-this-related-to-Qatar-nature.
UlikeQL, if trying to convince people that it is possible to remain polite and calm despite having a difference of opinion is being too diplomatic, according to you, so let me say I am proud to be diplomatic. I did not endorse the Indians being smelling comment myself and would never wish MIH to support it further. However, if you see carefully, the real motive in the comment was not insult an ethnicity. It was just to emphasize how the hotel would think of the poor drivers if they were to consider inviting them inside their restaurant. MIH later explained this even and said clearly that the intention was not to ridicule. I think the comment was just needless from the start and should have not been furthered anyway. Why do we not just do a grace to the rest of the people now and just shut up about it.
Azilana, with all due respect and under all your patience, madam, I am starting to sense a personal grievance between you and MIH. In my language there is a proverb that says something like this, "O God, let the hound get freed from the rabbit's grip". MIH has not spoken anything offensive after the original comments, but many among us here are not shying away from criticizing without fail. Let us just let it go now for once.
The dark knight, I am sorry but I am really going to have to disagree with you on this one. MIH can be anything but stupid. I do not know anything about the person's background. But looking at MIH's posts, I can tell you the intellectuall level therein is pretty much above average.
Ghazalz, I can explain. Describing something means just recounting the story as a neutral observer. Attacking means using a language that suggests hate, anger, frustration and similar emotions on part of the one who describes. An exmaple here is in order. A man has a fight with his wife. He then later describes her as irritable, unable to undertand his view point, grumpy and the like. But he will be attacking her if he calls her bad name for instance the word used for a female dog. I hope you understand.

Iftar (Arabic: إفطار), refers to the evening meal when Muslims break their fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is done right after Maghrib (sunset) time. Traditionally, three dates are eaten to break the fast, in the tradition of the prophet Muhammed, who broke his fast in this manner.
Many Muslims believe that feeding someone iftar as a form of charity is very rewarding and that it was practiced by Prophet Muhammad.
I am proud and happy to reminisce(sp) to say that under the leadership of SPEED of the QLVG and magnanimous kind heart of pitstop, we did the first "iftar" distribution back in 2008(?) and it was a success.
We didn't do it for public accolade, we did it coz we cared.
The next year, QLVG did it again...we were joined on the street by QTEL in the streets.
The year after that, it was a joined force of ILQVG and QLVG...and the year after that by the QRC, it is there...and the others follow suit. Very heart-warming
I only got 1/16 Muslim blood in me...I'm just a working resident, an expat (or TCN) but I respect the culture and tradition of my host country, my second home away from home for the last 7 years.
MY POINT IS...MIMH can always nitpick and stick his/her nose of a lot of things but this particular topic? I find it disrespectful...and done in bad taste.
Hotels such as CROWNE PLAZA, MARRIOT RENAISSANCE expressed their support and kind gestures by giving iftar packs for those in fasting but still has to work...so there's nothing disgusting about it.
That's why I do mean it when I said in my earlier post: this person needs to get bioatch-slapped to knock the sense out of him/her.

As for MIMH and intelligent, I would reserve my comments cos it is comparative and needs to be seen who is saying so cos it is a nicer way to say I am intelligent too..:) I would however say MIMH is a quick learner and learnt rather too quickly that mentioning (or should I say ridiculing) which nationality would not only keep its posts alive but also get favors from Mods on QL. And someone like dweller stating that earlier just sums it up.

Prism, QL has been effective before ...because the QLers then posts, comments on topics and get into fights onboard but no one would go down on how one nationality is....it was considered taboo and bad netiquette.
Nowadays, one would sign up, create a user ID and go beserk onboard, without even thinking what they were saying...no courtesy, no respect...which is disheartening.
So, people leave QL, or log in but just on "read mode".
let's see...dweller, xena, adey, han18, TCOM and a couple of folks are still around...others left, for obvious reasons.

Go on crowne plaza, invite them into one of your restaurants say 20 at a time and let them pick from your menu and then I will be impressed. We all know they will not as it will cost too much, (charity has a price for publicity) and they do see them as undesirable. If they tried to enter a restaurant in a hotel on their own they would probably get turned away.

This is a stpid thread and after crossing by ...other threads of MIH, I have to agree with Azilana and many others who described the writer of this thread as a moron who seeks attention and try to open topics that create hatred and bashing arguments between people.
As for Segmund who is trying to show his diplomacy and balanced opinion, I find him as pretentious person, or else he would not support a mornon and speaks with other commentators who disagree with the writer by telling:
- robher soft, hey do you mean rob her? or rub her? hehehe
- And calling Palestinians as devious people.
Not only in this thread, but in many other threads he looks as a lawyer for MIH and this is why some commentators are suspecting him and MIH to be either one person or relate to each other (wife, workmate..etc). In short, I agree with Azilana, Britexpat, Ingeniero, Mr_Qatar, Dawood Khan, Tarsiers, TheDarkknightrises and many others,and disagree with only the twin Segmund-MIH.
