Al Janoub Arena Opens Today With Qatar-China Clash Ahead of FIBA World Cup 2027

Al Janoub Arena officially opens its doors today, hosting the highly anticipated clash between Qatar and China in Window 4 of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.

The match carries added significance as part of the "One Year to Go" celebrations, marking the beginning of the final-year countdown to the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.

It will also give the arena its first competitive test in a World Cup-style environment, allowing fans to experience the venue one full year before the global tournament begins.

Qatar enter the game after finishing second in Group D of the first phase of the Asian Qualifiers with 10 points, behind Lebanon.

The national team secured its place in the second phase despite already being automatically qualified for the World Cup as the host nation.

Qatar will begin the second phase against China before facing Japan and South Korea in home-and-away games during the upcoming qualification windows.

The opening of Al Janoub Arena alongside the Qatar-China game also forms part of the country's wider preparations to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.

Located in Al Wakrah, the arena has been transformed from a football venue into a basketball arena after previously hosting matches during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Following its redevelopment for the 2027 basketball World Cup, the venue now offers seating for 8,200 spectators during basketball competitions.

Facilities include Sky Boxes, hospitality seating and Courtside Seats close to the playing court, as well as changing rooms and recovery facilities for teams.

Food and beverage outlets are also distributed throughout the arena to support the spectator experience during events.

The redevelopment reflects efforts to build on Qatar's existing sporting infrastructure while preparing the venue for major continental and international basketball competitions.
