Google Tests Purchasing Flipkart Products Through AI

Google has begun testing a new feature that allows users to purchase products from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly through its Gemini and AI Mode services. The move reflects the company’s efforts to expand the role of artificial intelligence from simply discovering and recommending products to participating directly in purchasing transactions.

According to TechCrunch, some users are seeing a button labelled "Buy" within Flipkart product listings displayed in Gemini and AI Mode. Pressing the button takes the user directly to Flipkart’s checkout page. The test remains in its early stages and is limited to a small number of users and a limited selection of products, including smartphones, electronics and mobile phone accessories.

Google intends to expand the trial later in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season. The move comes as Google and its competitors, including OpenAI, work to add e-commerce capabilities to artificial intelligence services, shifting from providing shopping recommendations to carrying out more stages of the online purchasing process.

In parallel, Google is developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard that enables artificial intelligence agents to interact with retailers across different stages of the shopping journey, including payment and purchasing. The company previously said it was collaborating with Flipkart to provide agentic shopping experiences for consumers in India without disclosing details of the test.

The Flipkart trial represents another step towards transforming search engines and artificial intelligence assistants from tools for discovering products and comparing options into platforms capable of carrying out more stages of the shopping process, including completing purchases.
